Barnes & Noble Returns to Old Orchard Shopping Center

Press Release

Author Sara Paretsky to Hold a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony and Book Signing at the Grand Opening on Wednesday, November 16 at 10 am

Skokie, IL – November 9, 2022 – Barnes & Noble is very pleased to announce its return to The Old Orchard Shopping Center.  Barnes & Noble closed its previous location in the Center in 2021 after 27 years of bookselling when the site was redeveloped.  The new bookstore is to occupy over 20,000 square feet of space across two floors.  The first floor will be home to a Paper Source store, bringing this beloved Chicago brand to the Center for the first time.  The Old Orchard Barnes & Noble is to open on Wednesday, November 16th.

The new Barnes & Noble is located at 4999 Old Orchard Shopping Center, Skokie, IL 60077, next to The Cheesecake Factory, in the former Tom Price Furniture space.  It will officially open to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 AM CT on November 16th.  Chicago legend and New York Times bestselling author, Sara Paretsky, will be cutting the ribbon on opening day and signing copies of Overboard, book #21 in the V. I. Warshawski Series.

“The closing of the old Barnes & Noble last year almost broke our email inbox as customers wrote to express their dismay,” said James Daunt, CEO of Barnes & Noble.  “It is especially pleasing therefore to reopen in Old Orchard.  We do so with a truly stunning store.  I think the book lovers of Chicago will be surprised and delighted at quite how beautiful it is possible to make a new bookstore.  It is very exciting for us to add a new Paper Source, bringing their particular magic to the space.”

The new bookstore is part of the recent renaissance at Barnes & Noble.  Having opened only one or two new stores each year during the decade after 2009, Barnes & Noble has already opened 16 new bookstores this calendar year and has over 30 further stores in development for 2023.  The Old Orchard location will be Barnes & Noble’s second new bookstore recently opened in Illinois, having opened its Algonquin store last Fall.

“Our team of tenured booksellers is so pleased to be returning to Old Orchard and delighted to have such an amazingly beautiful store with which to get to work,” said Mary Mateer, Store Manager.  “Paper Source will be a beautiful complement to our great new bookstore.  We all look forward to welcoming both familiar faces and new customers inside our doors, just in time for the holidays.”
