New York, NY – September 27, 2023 – Barnes & Noble announces The Prospectors as their October National Book Club pick and welcomes readers to join author Ariel Djanikian at a free live virtual event. The author will be in conversation with Shannon DeVito, Senior Director of Books at Barnes & Noble, and Miwa Messer, Executive Producer of Poured Over, the B&N Podcast, to discuss the title as well as answer questions from audience members. Attendees must register via Eventbrite to access the livestream on Zoom.

“This is an epic, sweeping novel, spanning generations and geography, that demonstrates the impact of the Gold Rush on the Yukon’s First Nations people,” said Lexie Smyth, Category Manager for Fiction, Barnes & Noble. “You can’t help but get wrapped up in this narrative of family, ambition, greed, and the morality of inheritance. Djanikian weaves a glittering world where intentions are not always what they seem, and avarice lurks around every corner. This page-turning novel will spark some very lively book club debates.”

The Prospectors traces a line from the late 1800s to the early 21st century, from the sunbaked fields of California to the frozen tundra of the Yukon Territory and back again. In 2015, one woman looks back on her family, how they made their fortune, and the moral implications that reverberate over a century later.

The Barnes & Noble Book Club selects a newly published work of fiction each month, chosen by their booksellers to provoke, engage and enthrall book lovers. The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition of The Prospectors features designed endpapers, a reading group guide and a bonus essay by the author. Leading up to the event, readers can share their thoughts and engage in conversation on social media using the hashtag #BNBookClub. During the livestream, readers are encouraged to participate in the discussion and submit questions to be answered throughout.

“I am beyond excited that The Prospectors is the Barnes & Noble Book Club pick for October,” said author Ariel Djanikian. “For so long, I've experienced the joy of discovering fiction through these recommendations, and it's an honor to share this novel with readers who seek the thrill of being transported by a new story. The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition also gave me space in the Author’s Note and Q&A to delve into the pleasures and challenges of melding a personal family saga with the big history of the Klondike Gold Rush. Thank you, Barnes & Noble, for treating books like treasures and for holding this one up!”

The enthusiasm and word-of-mouth recommendations of Barnes & Noble booksellers across the country have sparked ardent praise from readers nationwide, turning great novels into bestsellers. Previous Barnes & Noble Book Club selections have included: Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller, The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin and The Cloisters by Katy Hays.
