New York, NY – August 30, 2023 – Barnes & Noble announces Happiness Falls as their September National Book Club pick and welcomes readers to join author Angie Kim at a free live virtual event. The author will be in conversation with Shannon DeVito, Senior Director of Books at Barnes & Noble, and Miwa Messer, Executive Producer of Poured Over, the B&N Podcast to discuss the title as well as answer questions from audience members. Attendees must register via Eventbrite to access the livestream on Zoom.

“Angie Kim completely flips the domestic-drama script with Happiness Falls,” said Lexie Smyth, Category Manager for Fiction, Barnes & Noble. “This utterly compelling novel drew me in with its gripping plotline, but what kept me turning the pages were the richly drawn siblings of the Parkson family: twins Mia and John, and their neurodivergent younger brother, Eugene. This is a novel that asks questions of its readers: what creates happiness? What is language, and who gets to speak? Can we ever truly know the people we call family? This is a book that I could not put down, that I had to put in the hands of others, and that I could not stop talking about. This is a book ripe for many discussions, and I cannot wait for our Book Club readers to pick this one up and start having conversations about it of their own.”

The search for a missing father begins to unwind a tangle of family secrets in this riveting new novel from the author of Miracle Creek. Angie Kim weaves together a page-turning mystery, a domestic drama and a philosophical inquiry into the nature of language to create a novel that is wholly original and completely unforgettable.

The Barnes & Noble Book Club selects a newly published work of fiction each month, chosen by their booksellers to provoke, engage and enthrall book lovers. The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition of Happiness Falls features designed endpapers and a beautiful black and turquoise cover beneath the dust jacket, and includes a reading group guide and exclusive Q&A with the author. Leading up to the event, readers can share their thoughts and engage in conversation on social media using the hashtag #BNBookClub. During the livestream, readers are encouraged to participate in the discussion and submit questions to be answered throughout.

“I am overjoyed and beyond grateful that Happiness Falls has been chosen as the September pick for the Barnes & Noble Book Club,” said Angie Kim. “The first time I saw my debut book in an actual bookstore was at my local B&N, so this honor is especially meaningful to me. I loved answering questions about my writing process and why these characters and this story mean so much to me for the special B&N edition, and I can’t wait to connect with B&N’s passionate booksellers and readers throughout September. Thank you again, Barnes & Noble, for everything you do to support writers and readers and for helping us to connect with one another.”

The enthusiasm and word-of-mouth recommendations of Barnes & Noble booksellers across the country have sparked ardent praise from readers nationwide, turning great novels into bestsellers. Previous Barnes & Noble Book Club selections have included: The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller, The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin and The Cloisters by Katy Hays.
