Barnes & Noble Presents Good Material by Dolly Alderton as Their February 2024 National Book Club Selection
The bookseller invites readers to join the free virtual event on Tuesday, March 5th at 3:00 PM ET
New York, NY – January 31, 2024– Barnes & Noble announces Good Material as their February National Book Club pick and welcomes readers to join author Dolly Alderton at a free live virtual event. The author will be in conversation with Lexie Smyth, Category Manager for Fiction at Barnes & Noble, and Jenna Seery, Associate Producer of Poured Over, the B&N Podcast, to discuss the title as well as answer questions from audience members. Attendees must register via Eventbrite to access the livestream on Zoom.
“With Good Material, Dolly Alderton once again proves that no one else writes about love the way she does,” said Lexie Smyth, Category Manager for Fiction, Barnes & Noble. “The story of a break-up from two perspectives, it reads like Nora Ephron meets Nick Hornby. Populated by an unforgettable cast of characters, Alderton has crafted a story I wanted to climb inside of and live in. Laugh-out-loud funny, tender, and full of her signature insights about matters of the heart, our Book Club readers will find so much to discuss about Jen and Andy’s break up. I am so jealous of everyone who gets to read this for the first time, and I’m so pleased to share this as our February Book Club pick.”
Good Material is a savvy exploration of love, friendship and all the shades in between — perfect for fans of Curtis Sittenfeld and Emily Henry. The story follows dual perspectives of newfound exes Andy and Jen alongside a memorable ensemble of characters as Andy navigates the rough terrain of heartbreak, determined to pinpoint where the relationship went wrong in hopes of soon making it right. From NYT best-selling author of Ghosts and Everything I Know About Love, comes a witty, clever and gripping new story embodying just what it means to fall in… and out… of love.
The Barnes & Noble Book Club selects a newly published work of fiction each month, chosen by their booksellers to provoke, engage and enthrall book lovers. The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition of Good Material features special embossing on the cover and a reading group guide. Leading up to the event, readers can share their thoughts and engage in conversation on social media using the hashtag #BNBookClub. During the livestream, readers are encouraged to participate in the discussion and submit questions to be answered throughout.
“I am incredibly thrilled that Barnes & Noble has picked Good Material for their book club,” said author Dolly Alderton. “While reading and writing are so often described as solitary acts, my experience of both has been much more convivial, more reliant on the exchange of ideas and passions and stories. I interviewed more than a dozen men — male friends, partners of friends, and stand-up comics — to get the voice right for Good Material. The entire book was born of conversation, and so it feels deeply satisfying that it is a book club pick, and I’m so grateful to B&N for sharing it with their readers.”
The enthusiasm and word-of-mouth recommendations of Barnes & Noble booksellers across the country have sparked ardent praise from readers nationwide, turning great novels into bestsellers. Previous Barnes & Noble Book Club selections have included: Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller, The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin and The Cloisters by Katy Hays.
