New York, NY – September 4, 2024 – Barnes & Noble announces Colored Television as their September National Book Club pick and welcomes readers to join author Danzy Senna at a free live virtual event on Tuesday, October 1st at 3PM ET. The author will be in conversation with Lexie Smyth, Category Manager for Fiction at Barnes & Noble, and Miwa Messer, Producer and Host of Poured Over, the Barnes & Noble podcast, to discuss the title as well as answer questions from audience members. Attendees must register via Eventbrite to access the livestream on Zoom.

“A new Danzy Senna novel is always a gift, and I could not be more excited to put forward her latest, Colored Television, as our September Book Club pick,” said Lexie Smyth, Category Manager for Fiction, Barnes & Noble. “This rich, dark comedy tells the story of Jane, a hopeful “second time” novelist who pivots to the small screen in Los Angeles when her manuscript is rejected. Senna seamlessly weaves sharp satire into impactful discussions of representation, ownership of intellectual property, struggles of a working artist, realities of a long-term marriage, and getting by versus selling out. I raced through this book because I had to know how Jane was going to get herself out of the messes she created. I am really looking forward to being a part of all the conversations this laugh-out-loud story is sure to spark with our Book Club readers.”

From the bestselling author of Caucasia comes an exhilarating new novel of reinvention and racial identity brimming with the trademark humor we expect from Danzy Senna. Colored Television is an ode to artists — both struggling and successful — who have endured the highs and lows of an unforgiving industry. After relocating to Los Angeles to house-sit for a friend, Jane is determined to finish the novel that she expects will afford her and her family financial freedom. But after being confronted with an unfortunate reality, she pins her hopes on a potential collaboration with a Hollywood producer. Effortlessly smart and undeniably funny, Senna’s writing makes even the most mundane aspects of life feel like a high-stakes thriller.

The Barnes & Noble Book Club selects a newly published work of fiction each month, chosen by their booksellers to provoke, engage and enthrall book lovers. The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition of Colored Television includes a conversation between the author and bestselling novelist Rumaan Alam, as well as a reader's guide exclusively for Barnes & Noble customers.

“I’m so thrilled to have Colored Television chosen as the Barnes and Noble September Book Club pick,” said author Danzy Senna. “This is a novel that seems especially fun to read in the company of others — and I hope it will inspire spirited discussions among readers from all walks of life — conversations about money and Hollywood and art and race and the elusive middle-class American dream. Thank you so much, Barnes and Noble, for championing literature, and for curating these spaces of conversation and community among people who love books.”

Leading up to the event, readers can share their thoughts and engage in conversation on social media using the hashtag #BNBookClub. During the livestream, readers are encouraged to participate in the discussion and submit questions to be answered throughout.

The enthusiasm and word-of-mouth recommendations of Barnes & Noble booksellers across the country have sparked ardent praise from readers nationwide, turning great novels into bestsellers. Previous Barnes & Noble Book Club selections have included: Tom Lake by Ann Patchett, The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller, The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin and The Cloisters by Katy Hays.
