Barnes & Noble Presents Albums of the Month Selections for June 2024

Press Release

New York, NY – May 29, 2024 – Barnes & Noble announces its June selections for Albums of the Month, featuring the following four categories: Artist to Watch, Hip Hop Monthly Pick, Americana Monthly Pick and Pop Monthly Pick. Alongside the monthly Artist to Watch, the Album of the Month program celebrates a rotating selection of music genres to capture the full scope of the music industry.

This month’s Artist to Watch is indie pop group The Marías for their album, Submarine. After hints of the album's progress as early as 2022 and the writing of the single “Run Your Mouth” in September of 2022, Submarine was released in May of 2024. Representing solitude and exploration, Submarine is the second studio album of The Marías.

“Los Angeles Indie Pop band The Marías made a name for themselves over the years, singing in both English and Spanish, and collaborating with big stars like Bad Bunny and Young Miko, said Crissi Bariatti, Senior Merchandise Manager, Barnes & Noble. “Their sophomore album, Submarine, is a breakthrough album for the band, with their unique sound and dreamy aura reflected both sonically and in their music videos. Elements of Jazz percussion, guitar riffs and horn solos alongside lead singer María Zardoya’s velvety smooth vocals will have you hooked from the very first listen.”

For the Hip Hop Monthly Pick, Barnes & Noble booksellers chose Tyler, the Creator’s fifth studio album Igor. Incorporating hip hop, neo soul, R&B and funk, Igor has been heralded as the best work of Tyler, the Creator’s music career.

“June is Hip Hop Month, and what better way to celebrate than with Tyler, the Creator’s Igor, the groundbreaking album that shot Tyler’s profile into the stratosphere.,” said Bill Castle, Director of Merchandise, Barnes & Noble. “A complex story of heartbreak and the many stages of grief of a relationship, the album’s erratic sound is consistent with the range of emotions felt during a breakup. Completely self-produced, written, and mixed, Igor won the 2019 Grammy for Best Rap Album and is considered by many to be his best work.”

The Americana Monthly Pick goes to the The Avett Brothers self-titled album The Avett Brothers. Their 12th studio album, The Avett Brothers released May 17, 2024, focusing on the same signature sounds that are synonymous with the band’s early success.

“With a return to the sound that originally shot the folk-rock band to fame, it is fitting that The Avett Brothers’ new album is self-titled,” said Tina Mong, Commercial Strategy Manager, Barnes & Noble. “Seth and Scott Avett’s catchy harmonies over simple instrumentation is what brought fans in with their 2009 hit “I and Love and You”, and what will bring them back full circle twelve albums later.”

Lastly, the Pop Monthly Pick goes to Glorious by Kate Hudson. The debut album of the Golden Globe-winning actress follows the release of her debut single “Talk About Love,” which came out in January of 2024, and two subsequent singles “Live Forever” (March 2024) and “Gonna Find Out” (April 2024).

“Yes, that Kate Hudson,” said Bariatti. “The multi-talented actress/author/businesswoman shows us yet another side with her debut album, Glorious. Parts Joan Jett, Linda Ronstadt, and Stevie Nicks, this album showcases Kate’s stylistic range. Each track has its own personality and vibe, as she moves from sleek pop to quiet folk to pure rock and roll with ease.  Penny Lane (from the film Almost Famous) no more—Kate Hudson is the rock star this time!

Barnes & Noble celebrates new and exciting music every month. Previous Barnes & Noble Albums of the Month selections have included: The Chainsaw Man Soundtrack, by Kensuke Ushio, Vampire Weekend, by Vampire Weekend, JPEG RAW by Gary Clark Jr., In Rainbows, by Radiohead, Little Girl Blue by Nina Simone, Master of Puppets by Metallica, and What Now by Brittany Howard.
