Barnes & Noble Opens New Store in Upper East Side

New York, NY – July 12, 2023 – Barnes & Noble is thrilled to announce the opening of its newest New York City bookstore on Wednesday, July 19^th. This event marks their long-awaited return to the Upper East Side after the former location closed in 2020. The bookstore will officially open to the public at 9 AM ET on Wednesday the 19^th, with author Adriana Trigiani cutting the ribbon and signing copies of her book The Good Left Undone.

The new Barnes & Noble is located at 1550 3^rd Ave on the corner of 87^th St., across from Whole Foods, in the space formerly occupied by Duane Reade. The new location showcases the highly lauded bookstore design seen in the most recent Barnes & Noble store openings. The new bookstore is over 7,000 sq ft across the first floor of this large, corner building.

The customers of our 86^th St. store made plain their feelings, in inimitable style, when we closed in 2020 so it is especially pleasing to restore to them their bookstore,” said James Daunt, CEO, Barnes & Noble. “Moving just around the corner, it is a huge improvement over the old store to have such a beautiful and bright space. The experienced Upper East Side bookselling team under Kenneth Tan have crafted a bookstore of which to be proud.”

Barnes & Noble is enjoying a period of tremendous growth, buoyed by significant expansion of the market for physical books driven by word-of-mouth and social media recommendations. In 2022, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019. The bookseller expects to open over 30 new bookstores in 2023, with the new UES location being the first to open in Manhattan since 2007. The bookseller opened a new store on Atlantic Avenue in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, in January, and this July completed a total renovation of its Upper West Side bookstore at Broadway and 82^nd Street.
