New York, NY – February 1, 2010 – Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, announced today that it will celebrate Black History Month with special events and promotions recognizing the significant contributions by African-Americans to the world’s social, political and economic development. Throughout February, Barnes & Noble will host Storytime events, promotions and celebrity appearances in stores and online at Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com).
All stores will have a Black History Month table with displays of books, gift items, and CDs and DVDs celebrating Black History Month. Displays will include merchandise on the Lunch Counter Sit Ins, which mark its 40th anniversary this year. Displays will also feature Nelson Mandela: A Life in Photographs by David Elliot Cohen. This beautiful oversize photo-biography from Sterling Publishing has more than 100 photos and includes the South African leader's six great historic speeches, a detailed overview of the apartheid struggle, as well as an essay on Mandela's personal role in the country's history. In addition, Barnes & Noble stores will also highlight the artwork of acclaimed African-American artist/author Synthia Saint James on an exclusive signature tote bag and signage throughout the store.
Barnes & Noble stores across the country will host Storytime events with readings and themed activities, as well as local author events related to Black History Month. The Upper East Side Barnes & Noble in New York City will host a Writers on Writers panel conversation with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Farah Jasmine Griffin and Dayo Olopade on “What Makes an African-American Classic?” on Monday, February 22, at 7 p.m. Carl Weber (Big Girls Do Cry) will do multiple signings in Georgia and North Carolina; Andrea Davis Pinkney (Sit In: How Four Friends Stood Up By Sitting Down) will be at stores in Georgia, North Carolina, and New York City; and Sharon Flake (You Don’t Even Know Me) will be signing at stores in Georgia, Virginia, and Michigan.
