| Barnes & Noble and MetaMetrics Offering Free Lexile Seminars |
| Educators Invited to Learn About Lexile Measures During Barnes & Noble Spring Educator Appreciation Week, April 10-18 |
New York, NY — April 6, 2010 — Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, is pleased to announce that MetaMetrics® will present free seminars on The Lexile Framework® for Reading in select stores as part of Spring Educator Appreciation Week, April 10-18. The seminars will explore how educators can use Lexile® measures to recommend books that best match a student’s individual reading level and goals.
Last year, Barnes & Noble began offering customers the ability to search for books by Lexile® measure both in stores and online at Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com). Barnes & Noble.com product pages display the Lexile measure for all titles in the Lexile Book Database, and Barnes & Noble is adding Lexile measures to up to 5,000 books from its own publishing imprints.
Recognized as the most widely adopted reading metric, Lexile measures are used at the school level in all 50 states and by more than 150 publishers. A Lexile measure, which is represented by a number followed by an “L” (such as 850L), is a true measure of a student’s reading ability that may not necessarily correlate with a specific grade level. The Lexile measure gives educators options for reading recommendations that are customized to the student’s unique learning needs and provide an appropriate level of reading challenge to support literacy growth. The Lexile seminars will demonstrate the in-store and online search options educators have to find books by Lexile measure, as well as MetaMetrics’ “Find a Book” on the Lexile website (www.Lexile.com). Seminars will be offered at the following Barnes & Noble locations:
- The Streets at SouthPoint, 8030 Renaissance Parkway, Suite 855, Durham, N.C., on Saturday, April 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Mansell Crossings, 7660 Northpoint Parkway, Suite 200, Alpharetta, Ga., on Wednesday, April 14, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- The Forum, 5141 Peachtree Parkway, Norcross, Ga., on Thursday, April 15, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Houston Champions, 5303 FM 1960 West, Houston, Texas, on Friday, April 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Baybrook II, 1029 W Bay Area Boulevard, Webster, Texas, on Saturday, April 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
As part of Spring Educator Appreciation Week, Barnes & Noble stores will also host other special events that will highlight the services Barnes & Noble offers to save educators time and money. Educators who shop at Barnes & Noble during this week-long celebration will receive a 25% discount on personal and classroom purchases, a 10% discount on DVDs and music, and a chance to win a $500 Barnes & Noble gift card and other prizes. Educators must present a valid Barnes & Noble Educators Discount Card or sign up for a free card while in the store to receive the discounts.* For more information and event schedules, educators should visit the website of their local Barnes & Noble store.
