New York, New York – October 3, 2007 – Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, announced today that it will open two new Barnes & Noble stores in Manhattan. The 36,000-square-foot Tribeca Barnes & Noble at 270 Greenwich Street will open November 28th. The more than 50,000-square-foot Upper East Side Barnes & Noble at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue will open in July 2009.
The two large stores will each stock close to 200,000 book, music, DVD and magazine titles and include a café serving Starbucks coffee. Each will have large children’s departments, advanced technology music-listening and movie-previewing systems, giant newsstands, and wi-fi service. The stores will serve as neighborhood community centers, hosting community events throughout the year. These events include author readings and discussion, book clubs, and programs with local educational, literary and cultural organizations.
Barnes & Noble announced that due to the high cost of rent it is forced to close its Astor Place store (4 Astor Place) at the end of January 2008 and its Chelsea store (675 Sixth Avenue at 22nd Street) at the end of March 2008.
“While two Barnes & Noble stores are closing due to the increasingly high costs of renting space in Manhattan, we are ever committed to New York City, which is why we are opening two new superstores,” said Mitchell Klipper, chief operating officer.
