CYBER MONDAY KICKS OFF ONLINE HOLIDAY SHOPPING AT BARNES & NOBLE.COM

Most Popular Items Purchased by Barnes & Noble.com Customers included James Patterson’s Cross and Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope;
Cars and Grey’s Anatomy DVDs; Josh Groban’s Awake and Beatles remix Love; Lego Mindstorms NXT and Star Theater 2

NEW YORK, NY – November 28, 2006 – Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com) a wholly owned subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, kicked off the online holiday shopping season on Cyber Monday, November 27, the Monday that marks the unofficial start of the online holiday shopping season.  Barnes & Noble.com customers Cyber Monday purchases included many items from the site’s 2006 “Holiday Gift Guide” (www.barnesandnoble.com/giftguide), a selection of the season’s best books, CDs, DVDs, calendars, gift items, toys, and videogames.

Cyber Monday kicked off special Barnes & Noble.com promotional offers.  They include a free travel bag with a $75 purchase, up to 50 % off certain DVDs and “Buy Two, Get One Free” on special collection books.

Some of the most popular products sold on Cyber Monday at Barnes & Noble.com included: 

  • James Patterson’s Cross was the number one fiction bestseller.  Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream was the bestselling nonfiction title.   
  • Titles in Top 10 fiction and nonfiction overall included Mitch Albom’s For One More Day (number four), Nora Ephron’s I Feel Bad About My Neck (number six), and Tony Hillerman’s latest mystery The Shape Shifter (number nine).
  • Popular pre-orders included:  Michael Crichton’s Next (number 28), and Dean Koontz’s Brother Odd (number 30).
  • Pre-orders for The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest dominated DVD sales followed closely by the Pixar-animated feature Cars.
  • Season two of the Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy was the biggest selling TV series on DVD.
  • Music lovers helped propel Josh Groban’s Awake and the unique Beatles remix Love to the top of the buying lists.
  • The bestselling toy was Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics set.  Star Theater 2 home planetarium was also very popular. The PC/Video hot sellers include Hannah Montana for Nintendo DS, Gears of War for Xbox 360, and Guitar Hero 2 for PS2.

The most popular searches over the holiday weekend and on Cyber Monday were:

  • Searches for Eragon, the new film version of Christopher Paolini’s bestselling fantasy about to be released on December 15, closely challenged the perennial most-searched for Harry Potter. Also rising were searches for Mary Pope Osborne’s beloved Magic Tree House children’s book series.  
  • Proving that the home office and home entertaining are top of mind for shoppers was the fact that calendars and cookbooks were the two most-searched-for categories. 
  • A diverse selection of authors were among the most popular searched: Rachael Ray, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Lemony Snicket, Mitch Albom, Stephen King, and Paula Deen.

Barnes & Noble.com customers can place orders as late as December 18th and receive delivery by the 24th and still take advantage of free shipping when purchasing orders of $25 or more via “Fast & Free Delivery.” Orders placed by noon EST on December 20th using Next Day Air will arrive by December 24th. For customers in Manhattan, the popular Same Day Delivery service is also available through December 22nd; orders placed by 11 a.m. will be delivered by 7 p.m. that day.
