NEW YORK, NY – July 31, 2012 – Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products, today announced that M. L. Stedman’s The Light Between Oceans is the latest selection in the Barnes & Noble Recommends program. The book is on sale today and can be purchased at any Barnes & Noble store, online at Barnes & Noble.com (www.bn.com/recommends) or instantly downloaded to Barnes & Noble’s NOOK® Readers and Tablets.
Titles selected for the B&N Recommends program are the books our booksellers can’t stop talking about. Thought-provoking and uniquely engaging, B&N Recommends selections are chosen for sheer reading pleasure and their appeal as book club picks.
In The Light Between Oceans, Tom Sherbourne, a decorated veteran of WWI, returns to Australia in 1918 to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes only four times a year and shore leaves are granted every two years at best, Tom brings his young wife, Isabel. Years later, a boat washes ashore, and in it are the body of a man, and a living baby girl. Tom wants to report the dead man and the baby immediately, but the grieving, childless Isabel convinces him -- against his better instincts -- that they should claim the baby and raise her as their own. The story comes to a head when they return to the mainland with a now-two-year-old Lucy, and are reminded that there are other people in the world, one of whom is desperate to find her daughter. M. L. Stedman was born and raised in Western Australia and now lives in London. The Light Between Oceans is her first novel.
Here’s what some of our booksellers are saying about The Light Between Oceans:
“This is a haunting story, extremely well written, that packs an emotional wallop that will leave you stunned. I can see this appealing to the many readers who devoured Water for Elephants and Atonement.” -- Mark Furlow, store manager, Deptford, NJ
“This is a novel that breaks your heart before slowly repairing it with redemption and forgiveness. It was a stark reminder that sometimes the right choice, the best decision, is the most difficult to make.” -- Jessica Valeske, store manager, Tigard, OR
"I was hooked from the very beginning. It is a great story, well written and a good example of human nature, good or bad. I am already talking it up to customers and co-workers." -- Alix Frank, bookseller, Austin, TX
Here is what the publishers of our previous B&N Recommends selection said about their recent success with the program:
“We were thrilled when Barnes & Noble fell in love—as we had—with Seating Arrangements, and chose it for their B&N Recommends program,” said Christine Gillespie, Senior Vice President, Associate Publisher, Knopf, Pantheon & Schocken Books. “The enthusiasm of everyone at Barnes & Noble, from the home office staff to booksellers across the country, has helped make Seating Arrangements a bestseller, and given Maggie Shipstead the terrific start she deserves as a writer.”
