In addition to our national efforts, many stores conduct local programs to benefit their communities. We have highlighted some of these events below. You can also search for local events in your area.
Sacramento, CA, Store Celebrates Summer Reading
Teaming up with Howe Avenue Elementary School, the Sacramento store hosted the largest summer school program in the school district. The partnership encouraged kids to read this past summer by involving them in Barnes & Noble’s Summer Reading program. The school’s principal noted that the students really enjoyed the reading program and all were motivated enough to successfully complete it.
Toward the end of the summer, booksellers joined the school for an energetic school assembly in which the students received their free books after reading eight other books. The assembly catered to the diverse area in which the store and school are located. The store arranged for a bilingual program for Storytime, which was split up into two groups by grade. One bookseller read a page in English and the next bookseller read the same page from the Spanish version of the book. A few days later, booksellers returned to the school with Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Day Campers Visit New York Store as Part of My Own Book Program

Children attending the East Harlem Tutorial Program went on a field trip to the Upper East Side Barnes & Noble’s Children’s Department as part of the My Own Book Program. The program gives children the tools to start their own libraries and become lifetime readers by teaching them how to choose appropriate and exciting books. The program then purchases the books for the children to take home.
Booksellers helped the children find age-appropriate books during their visit to the store. They also encouraged them to choose from a variety of titles. The young readers went home with big smiles, clutching their bags with the book of their choice.
